CDFW’s Nutria Eradication team has recently identified nutria on properties along Roaring River and captured a nutria on Grizzly Island Wildlife Area.
In an effort to find the complete extent of nutria present in California, CDFW staff needs to increase our surveillance footprint in the Delta. We need the publics’ help to do so. Commercial properties, utilities (Rec Districts, etc), clubs, and private landowners alike are crucial to CDFW being able to find and eradicate nutria from California. Willing landowners can help CDFW by providing a signed Temporary Entry Permit (TEP) that gives our team access to your property, on your terms.

Once CDFW has a signed TEP in place for your property, our operations will begin as staff become available. Staff will survey the property and conduct habitat assessments. As wetlands that exhibit good habitat for nutria are identified, staff will setup camera traps to try and confirm presence/absence of nutria on the property. Staff use existing animal trails, artificial wooden platforms (2 feet X 2 feet square), and vegetation platforms to attract nutria to the camera trap for identification. Cameras are secured to metal or wooden posts approximately 10 feet from the platform. Cameras are checked at varying intervals from once a week to once every 30-60 days. In the event that nutria are photographed on your property, our team would contact the landowner and discuss trapping plans. We do not set traps without interacting with our cooperating landowners prior.
