February 2nd marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands which was adopted in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. Since that time, over 2,000 wetlands, encompassing more than 2 million square kilometers (772,000 square miles), have been designated Ramsar wetlands of international importance.
